The Bluegrass by Teresa Wright a series of short stories about touring with “The Voice” Vern Gosdin in his 1983/4 “If You Gonna Do Me Wrong, Do It Right” tour.
Vern loved the tight harmonies in bluegrass and country music.
At the West Virginia Bluegrass Festival, we met up with some of his friends, the bluegrass band Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.
Inside the trailer, while we were off stage, we all huddled close together to practice layering vocal stacks on several famous bluegrass songs, and “Way Down Deep” was one of my favorites.
It was pure magic in West Virginia that afternoon!
I took the highest harmony parts and Carla joined in on the mid and low harmonies.
When we got back to the bus, Vern played us some more bluegrass music from his brother Rex.
Vern and Rex played together for many years as “The Gosdin Brothers”, and were known for their unmistakable sibling harmony.
They also played in several bluegrass bands on the West Coast which included “The Hillmen”.
His song “Way Down Deep” was one of the fun ones to perform live, and I got meet his co-writers, Max D. Barnes, and Max T. Barnes as well! Surreal moments with the best of the best that I cherish.
